Ginisang Sardinas with Miswa Noodles is easy to make in minutes and budget-friendly, too! It's a hearty, nutritious, and delicious meal you'll feel good serving the whole family.
Ginisang sardinas is my go-to dish when I am pressed for time and need dinner in a hurry. It's such a quick and easy meal to prepare, yet it always hits the spot!
However, the addition of miswa is one tip I learned from a friend who is the smartest frugal homemaker I know. She states, "We were twelve kids, and money was tight growing up. My mother had to work with limited resources, and this ginisang sardinas at miswa comfortably fed the bunch of us for less."
Miswa is indeed an inexpensive yet delicious way to extend a meal. The two ounces added will easily double the servings you get from three small cans of sardines.
But cheap and affordable it may be, this sardines with miswa recipe is anything but short on flavor! The hearty tomato-flavored sauce, fork-tender fish, and delicate wheat noodles combine into the ultimate comfort food. It's a filling and tasty dish you'll love for all meals.
Helpful tips
- I use canned sardines in tomato sauce and my favorite brand is Ligo. If using sardines packed in oil, drain the fish well from the oil and add one cup of tomato sauce during cooking.
- Add a couple of minced chili peppers or a few dashes of hot sauce for a kick of spice. You can also use the RED variety, which has chili added.
- As with most noodles, misua absorbs a lot of liquid. Make the dish saucier than you like as it will thicken more as it cools.
- Want to make it more filling and nutritious? Add sliced upo or ampalaya!
How to serve and store
- Serve for breakfast, lunch, or dinner with steamed rice and scrambled or hard-boiled eggs to round off the meal.
- Store leftovers in a container with a tight-fitting lid and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in a saucepan over medium heat to 165 F. Add more water as needed to loosen consistency and adjust seasonings to taste.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
- 1 onion, peeled and sliced thinly
- 2 medium Roma tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 3 cans (5.5 ounces each) tomato-based Sardines
- 2 cups water
- 2 ounces miswa noodles
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a pot over medium heat, heat oil. Add onions and garlic and cook until softened.
- Add tomatoes and continue to cook, mashing with the back of a spoon, until slightly softened.
- Add fish sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add sardines and water. Bring to a boil.
- Add miswa and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 2 to 4 minutes or until noodles are just softened.
- Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot.

Loved making this - I used herring in tomato sauce 7.5 oz can (Alstertor brand) and my leftover cooked salmon fillets. Because I like my sauce thick, I just used 1 cup of water. Added spinach and cucumbers. And placed it on top of warm couscous. Sarap! Thank you!!

Spinach and cucumber sounds interesting; will definitely try adding them next time I make this.

I like it. It's easy, it's quick, doesn't get many dishes dirty and the ingredients are easy to keep as pantry staples. It tastes a little bland to me on its own so I add a bit of cayenne for a kick. It's not such a frugal meal for me (sardines are 2.50$ a tin) and I couldn't feed 6 hungry adults with the amount this makes, but it's definitely become a go-to recipe for its simplicity.

Hi Biev
Wow! $2.50 for a tin of sardines! The Ligo brand I use is about .80 cents.
I am glad you liked the recipe. If you can find Ligo sardines in tomato sauce, try the spicy kind (comes in red can) to give that little kick of spice you want. Happy holidays!

If you are in California try the California girl brand of sardines. It comes in 35 oz tin can and cost less than $2.00 at Food for Less and Northgate. Itโs texture and taste is like ligo or maybe better. It comes in spicy and regular. Itโs usually on sale for 99cents or $1.25 a can during lent season. Will try this recipe. Thanks.

I live in Texas now and I haven't seen Food for Less here or Northgate (I use to go to this market every week!). Will see if I can find that brand on Amazon ๐
